Dear [Firstname]

Welcome to the current edition of Psych Press' monthly newsletter series. Well, the news from the stock market is that the economy may have "bottomed", and there are signs of "cautious confidence" returning to the business environment.

Moving from "Shocks and Scares" back to "Stocks and Shares" may provide the HR community with some confidence that they may again be partnering with businesses with goals broader than "survival". Strategy, competitive advantage, innovation, staff development, retention of key performers and team development are areas where HR can show leadership.

In this issue we have provided two research-based articles providing guidelines around these issues which we hope are topical within your HR environment.

The third article focuses on some broader environmental themes to do with business and society which may or may not resonate with your organisation, but reflects Psych Press' position.

If you would like to publish an article of your own within our newsletter, or offer feedback or open a discussion on specific issues, please contact Ms Nitha Prakash on pp@psychpress.com.au. We welcome your comments.

In this issue:

Article 3 - Key staff development and talent management best practice
Whilst laying off staff may minimise costs in the short term, this approach comes at a cost - the morale of remaining staff sharply decreases, and key people start to feel like they are in a sinking boat and focus their efforts on other career options rather than navigating the organisation through economic difficulties.
